Universal Flash Storage, Anyone?

Flash Memory Cards

There’s talk about Nokia collaborating with its rivals to come up with a common Flash memory card format, as if we have not been flooded with a hodgepodge of memory cards that are not interchangeable, or perhaps because of it.

They want to come up with what’s called Universal Flash Storage (UFS), a new memory card type that aims to standardize things and make the world a happy place to live in.

At present, trying to identify a memory card can be daunting: there’s CompactFlash I, CompactFlash II, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick Micro M2, Multimedia Card, Reduced Size Multimedia Card, MMCmicro Card, Secure Digital Card, miniSD Card, microSD Card, PC Card, xD-Picture Card, Intelligent Stick, Serial Flash Module, µ card, NT Card and SmartMedia card.

The proposed UFS specification already has the support of Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Micron Technology, Spansion, MTMicroelectronics and Texas Instruments. SanDisk seems missing on the list, but the flash memory biggie is a member of the Jedec Solid State Technology Association which will ultimately approve the new standard in 2009.
