At 26, Peter van Agtmael is already a veteran of two wars, Iraq and Afghanistan, photographing its pathos and horrors.
Peter took the photo above showing 23-year-old Jeff Reffner of Altoona, PA, in an emergency room in Baghdad after his Humvee was hit by an improvised explosive device. The soldier has since gone back home and is recovering.
This and many other photos accompany Peter’s account of the two wars in his Photographer’s Notebook published by ABC News.
Peter was named last year as one of the “25 under-25 Up-and-coming American Photographers†by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. This year, he won a World Press Photo Award for his images of night raids in Iraq.
