UK�s Vanessa Winship Wins Sony World Photography Awards

Vanessa Winship of the United Kingdom has been named overall winner and Photographer of the Year in the Sony World Photography Awards, winning $25,000 cash prize for her portraiture of Turkish girls titled “Sweet Nothings.” She received her award in ceremonies Friday from Honorary Board Member and legendary photographer Elliott Erwitt at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

Friday’s ceremony was the finale in a series of events in Cannes over the last few days, based on the theme of Legacy. Focusing on the past, present and future of photography, this has included the Sony Legacy Exhibition, curated by Magnum Photos; a photography summit to discuss the latest industry issues; and University Shoot Out, a student initiative to support the future generation of photographers.

Earlier this month, Arup Ghosh of India was named Amateur Photographer of the Year in the same competition. He was unable to attend the gala ceremonies in Cannes.
