Softboxes or Umbrellas for Bill and Ed?

I am going to school for fashion photography, but I was wondering (since lighting was already talked about) do you guys prefer softboxes or umbrellas?

I'm looking at buying the alien bee soft boxes. I know that I can make my own (thanx to the website) but i really dont wanna cause a fire lol….

also, how in demand are jobs for photographers. This is what I love, but im scared to death of going to school for all that time, and not getting anywhere with it. Any input will be highly appreciated….

Oh, and I LOVE THE SHOW :) THANKS.

Well Sando, I don't have a preference really, although the umbrella I like to work with most has a diffuser on the front most of the time. I think both modifiers have their place in lighting. It really depends on the look you are after. For example, for portraits I like the control you get with a softbox, but I also like to work with the feather edge of an umbrella.

I will say that umbrellas tend to be less expensive so they are often the choice of the beginner.

The one time I really prefer a softbox is when the shot involves a highly reflective surface. In this case, I like the reflection of a softbox better.

Finally, I'm not much of a career counselor, but I think if you really apply yourself and you are willing to work hard for a while, you can make a career for yourself in photography. I say you take some time to work for someone that already has a career and see if you can picture yourself doing it full time. There's no substitute for experience!

    Hi Sando,

Where are you going to study fashion photography? I'm looking at changing careers (move to fashion photography) I'm not coming across schools specializing in Fashion photography…

    Heya!
I have been doing underwater photography as a hobby for 3 yearsand shoot mostly using available light.Altough i have never been using a studio as a photographer I work as a model and, by observing profesional photographers i guess I have an idea on use of lights.
Tomorrow Im doing my first studio shooting for a model friend. I was wondering if u could get me any tips on wich setup should i use.We gonna try to do some fashion shots, full lenght with some props on the background. The studio is from uni, so i'll probably have access to most material.
Hope im lucky to get an anwer bfore the shot…unfortunately just came across ur site today. :((Wich is really great btw! and i will be using loads from now on!)
    Many many many tx!
    Flavia.
