Soft Proofing Images for Color Calibration and Printer Profiles

You can of course hit Print from the Windows menu and accept what comes out of your printer and that’s usually okay, given the sophistication of today’s computers.

But if you want to do it the professional way, there are a few steps you have to go through to ensure that you have the proper colors on the final photograph that you print.

Things like monitor calibration and printer profiles come to mind. You have to understand these if you wish to print like a pro, or submit your work for printing with a pro.

Canvas printer BrilliantPrints.com in Australia has a couple of useful posts on the subject and they take us through the paces of proper color printing. Specifically, they describe a step-by-step guide to installing and using a color profile in Adobe Photoshop. This is soft-proofing, a method which comes in handy too when you bring your image to a commercial printer like Brilliant Prints for large-format output.
