Sigma SD 14 Launch Postponed to Feb or March

Sigma SD14 DSLR

At about this time, we should be seeing the launch of the Sigma SD14 DSLR camera, but no, Sigma Corporation has definitely postponed its debut due to some hardware problems.

We quote here, verbatim, Kazuto Yamaki, Chief Operating Officer of Sigma Corporation:

“Of course we continued our development work on the SD14 in preparation for production and shipping. During this process, we found one issue that occurred occasionally and only under certain circumstances. Initially, we felt that this could be solved with a programming or processing solution. However, after careful investigation and many attempts at a solution, we have come to the conclusion that we need to make a hardware change to fix this issue completely.”

The Sigma SD14 DSLR was first announced at the Photokina in Germany last September, touting its new Foveon X3 imaging sensor. Unlike the CCD or the CMOS sensor, the Foveon X3 sensor features a unique three-layered pixel configuration – one layer each for Red, Green and Blue light rays – which Sigma claims efficiently reproduces color more accurately, and offers sharper resolution, pixel for pixel, than any conventional image sensor.

The SD14 was expected to be in stores shelves by this time. Target date for its launch will now be between February and March next year, maybe in time for the launch of another debutante, the Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro DSLR.
