Sigma DP1 Finally Shipping, Here’s a First Look from Pop Photo

Sigma DP1 Rangefinder Camera

The guys at PopPhoto.com have proof positive that the Sigma DP1 rangefinder camera is now finally a reality. They got a production model of the camera (word is that it will be out in some stores tomorrow, Monday, for all the world to see) and promptly put it through the paces of testing.

It will take a little while for the elves at the Pop Photo lab to dissect, scrutinize and analyze the DP1, but Jack Howard detained it for himself for a 24-hour inspection and he generously shares with us his first impressions.

Jack writes, “The build quality of the Sigma DP1 places it squarely in the luxe compact category, alongside competitors such as the Canon PowerShot G9 and the Ricoh GRII. The lenscap fits firmly in place, but pops off easily. Buttons are well damped, and the shutter button has a satisfying tactile sensation that is often missing in economy and mid-range compact cameras.”

The Sigma DP1 you might remember was first announced at Photokina 2006, displayed again at PMA 2007 and then again at PMA 2008. It promised to take the digital SLR’s capabilities into the body of a compact camera.

Now it’s here. Initial price: about $850.
