Seagate 1.5TB Barracuda 7200.11 Hard Drive

We’re talking terabytes now as far as hard drives go, and Seagate of Scotts Valley, California (yes, the Seagate) has just unveiled what purportedly is the world’s first 1.5-terabyte desktop hard drive.

The Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB hard drive is the 11th generation of Seagate’s flagship drive for desktop PCs and it marks the single largest capacity hard drive jump in the more than half-century history of hard drives, according to the company.

The drive packs 1.5TB on four platters, its Serial ATA 3Gb/second interface delivering an industry-leading sustained data rate of up to 120MB/second for fast boot, application startup and file access. The 3.5-inch drive is also offered in capacities of 1TB, 750GB, 640GB, 500GB, 320GB and 160GB with cache options of 32MB and 16MB.

At the same time, Seagate also announced two new notebook hard drives, the Momentus 5400.6 and Momentus 7200.4; the former a 5400RPM drive with SATA 3Gb/second interface and capacities ranging from 120GB to 500GB with an 8MB cache, the latter a 7200RPM hard drive with SATA 3GB/second interface with capacities ranging from 250GB to 500GB with a 16MB cache.
