Scotland Festival of Politics

We have to admire the Scots for the happy attitude they have towards politics, they even have a Festival of Politics to mark this year’s opening of the third session of the Scottish Parliament.

And one of the activities lined up for the happy occasion is the World Press Photo exhibition, showcasing 178 images, the best of last year’s press photography from around the world.

But because these are news photos, the pictures may not all be that happy; there are photos of suffering refugees in Darfur, the aftermath of an oil pipe explosion in Nigeria, sad solitary people on a New York street and of course that photo of stylish young Lebanese surveying a bombed neighborhood in Beirut, which won World Press Photo of the Year 2006.

There are happy and uplifting photos too, a big cat in a Chad park, a Paris street dancer and young Chinese in a football practice. Speaking of football, who could forget that memorable shot of a French hothead who head butted another player? It’s there too.

The Amsterdam-based World Press Photo organizes an annual competition to select the best examples of photojournalism from photographers, agencies, newspapers and magazines around the world.

The Scottish Parliament’s WPP exhibition will be seen in Holyrood from tomorrow, August 3, until the 26th.
