SanDisk, Sony Announce SxS Memory Card for Camcorders

SxS memory card for XDCAM EX camcorder

SxS (that’s “S by S”, for Sony and SanDisk) is a memory card specification compliant with the PCI Express standard to take advantage of its high speed data transfer; the two companies are jointly developing it for use in camcorders, like the Sony XDCAM EX series professional camcorders, and non-linear video editing systems.

The new SxS memory card will initially be available in 8GB and 16GB capacities. While the PCI-Express standard allow for maximum data transfer speed of 2.5 gigabits per second, SxS will have a transfer speed of 800 megabits per second.

Aside from offering high-speed data transfer of large video files, the SxS card format is compact (34 x 75 x 5mm), half the size of a PC Card, allowing for the design of professional camcorders that are smaller and lighter, while still offering high storage capacities.
