The Stock Artists Alliance (SAA) has just published extensive commentary about the Orphan Works bill as a resource for artists and other members of the visual arts community who will be affected by this legislation. Draft versions of the Orphan Works Act of 2008 were introduced on April 24 by both Houses of the US Congress. The controversial bill seeks to address issues on the use of copyrighted works whose owners may be impossible to identify and locate.

SAA said it has offered its perspective and specific recommendations on the proposed legislation and has urged Congress to amend the bills in a way that balances the needs of the users whom they are trying to serve with the interests of the copyright holders whom they must continue to protect.

The SAA’s avowed aim is to protect the interests of professional stock photographers even as it supports its members with information resources and ongoing advocacy initiatives.
