Rick Sammon Shares His Macro Photography Techniques

In his column today, photographer Rick Sammon takes us to a whole new way of seeing the magnificent world of tiny little things, how to capture its vibrant life via macro photography.

Rick says for true macro photography, you need a macro lens, as opposed to the macro/close-up setting on a zoom lens. Macro lenses let you get much closer to a subject than zoom lenses.

He has a number of stunning photographs to pique your interest, then he shares his tips and techniques for macro shooting: steady your shots, compose carefully, add a background, add light, focus carefully, watch your white balance and experiment.

Macro or micro? Don’t be confused kid; photographers used to describe this type of photography as macro until Nikon came along and insisted that it should be called micro. When you see these terms in photography, they mean the same.
