Picaboo: Photo Books are Better for Toddlers than Picture Books

Picaboo Photo Books

Picaboo is capitalizing on a finding by the American Psychological Association (APA, PDF 79KB) that toddlers learn better from books with photographs rather than those with illustrations or “likenesses” of objects. The company is taking that a step further by making the photos familiar to the child.

So, for example, instead of showing him a picture of a stupid dinosaur and saying Barney starts with B, you can show him his own picture holding a ball with a big letter B. That, according to Picaboo, will be more familiar with the toddler and his learning process will be faster.

Picaboo produces just such photo books, not just for toddlers, their idea center is chockfull of photo book suggestions and they have ready-made templates to make it even easier for you to make your own.

The software is free, you pay them for printing. Pricing starts at just $9.99 for an 8×6″ 20-page softcover photo book, and spans to $29.99 for an 8.5×11″ 20-page hardcover photo book.
