Photomobile Brings Photography to UK Neighborhoods

A roving van is doing the rounds of the neighborhoods in Manchester, UK to promote the awareness of photography in general, and black-and-white work in particular.

The Photomobile, as it is called, is visiting schools, colleges, local authorities, and art groups to demonstrate photographic processes under the guidance of experienced photographers and artists.

The Photomobile is completely self-contained and measures 6×2.3m, comprising a traditional chemical darkroom, a giant pinhole camera and camera obscura, a digital suite, and awnings to create an outdoor covered exhibition space.

It has wet and digital darkrooms to demonstrate and maintain the traditional skills of photography, and bring them into the 21st Century. Participants can experience being inside the camera obscura (literally, dark house or darkroom) and watch prints being developed in a traditional photographic darkroom.

The project is being run by Redeye, a collaboration of photographers based in Manchester and the North West of England, with funding from the Arts Council and sponsorships by Ilford Photo and parent company Harman technology.
