Phase One Medium Format Camera Gets a Launch Date

The open platform Phase One medium format camera is set to launch on March 19, 2008, according to Bo Abildgren, the company’s product manager.

Abildgren said Phase One will formally introduce the camera at the WPPI trade show in Las Vegas on March 17-19. The new medium format camera has been co-developed with Mamiya Digital Imaging, the digital successor to the venerable Mamiya brand.

Being an open platform, Phase One and Mamiya are allowing other manufacturers to develop lenses and digital backs for the new camera, in contrast to Hasselblad which has adopted a closed proprietary system with their H3D camera.

The medium format marketplace is currently populated by only a handful of players: Hasselblad, Leaf, Sinar, Mamiya and Phase One.
