Panasonic DMC-FX100 Too Has 12 Megapixels, Wide Angle

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX100

Is the megapixel race on again? Panasonic seems pleased to claim the bragging rights for the “world’s first” 12.2-megapixel camera following Casio’s announcement today of its own compact with 12.1 megapixels.

The new Panasonic DMC-FX100 also boasts of a 28mm wide-angle lens, perfect for group shots that don’t crop out the class goat at the leftmost side of the picture.

Panasonic also likes to claim that they were the first to have successfully incorporated Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) into its compact cameras and the DMC-FX100 can even detect and separate hand-shake from other movement of camera to raise both precision of detection and corrective effect.

The company says the DMC-FX100 features the Venus Engine III, Panasonic’s image-processing engine that supports a fast response time; shutter lag is down to 0.009 sec and minimum time between shots is 0.9 sec.

Now, the FX100’s image sensor of 1/1.7-inch is certainly bigger than the usual 1/2.5-inch CCDs that compact cameras use. But packing it in with 12.2 million pixels? Let’s just see how the pictures turn out when the production units start shipping by July.
