UK’s mobile phone giant Orange is demonstrating a prototype cellphone charger that relies on wind power. The portable charger is designed for those long outdoor camping trips where there’s no electric outlet available.
It weighs only about 5 ounces (150g) and small enough to carry around. You can let stand alone, or tie it up on a tree, but more conveniently, you can install it on top of your tent to catch the wind.
The wind charger will be on display at this year’s Glastonbury festival from June 22-24.
Of course you can’t buy one yet, it’s still a prototype. But with some DIY determination, it should not be very difficult to make one: a fan blade, a dynamo, some programmable microcontroller chips to regulate the voltage, it can be done.
Or wait when Orange ships it to a store near you.
