Olympus today announced the new E-5 professional digital SLR camera, updating its 3-year old predecessor, the E-3, but adds nothing much to the new model. The new Olympus flagship camera features the same weather-sealed body as the E-3, and a swivelling LCD screen just like the E-3 – now 3 inches from the previous 2.5 inches but improves it with 921K dots from the previous 230K pixels.
The E-5 image sensor is now 12.3 megapixels, up from the E-3’s 10.1MP. The new camera boasts a professionally tuned TruPic V+ image processing engine.
Olympus also brings the new model in sync with the times by adding HD video recording, Live View with Contrast Autofocus and shutter speeds of up to 1/8000th of a second.
Due for release in October 2010 – next month – the E-5 will retail for about $1,700.
