Olympus Announces 2006 BioScapes Winners

Deerinck's photo of a mouse retina

Photo above shows a microscopic image of the retina of a mouse, taken by San Diego researcher Thomas Deerinck. It won him first prize in the international 2006 Olympus BioScapes Digital Imaging Competition. This image was part of research into neurofibromatosis, a usually fatal childhood illness that can cause tumors to form on the optic nerve and other locations in the nervous system. For this brilliant crimson image of the inside of a mouse’s eye, Deerinck takes home $5,000 worth of Olympus products.

Second prize went to Hermann Aberle of Germany for his image of fruit fly muscles and axons, and third prize went to M.R. Dadpour of Iran for his photo of the Zinnia Flower Primordium. Full details of contest results and the photos may be viewed at www.olympusbioscapes.com.

The Olympus BioScapes Digital Imaging Competition is a yearly forum for showcasing microscopic photos and videos of life science subjects. It is now accepting entries for the 2007 contest.
