Nikon Flashes the SB-900 AF Speedlight

Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight

The Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight is the latest flashgun from Nikon, replacing its magnificent SB-800 at the top of the line and offering a number of state-of-the-art improvements. The SB-900 debuted today alongside the new Nikon D700 FX DSLR.

The new flashgun features a multi-step auto zoom covering a 17-200mm zoom range and three illumination patterns: standard, center-weighted and even. It also is quite intelligent, automatically sensing whether you’re using the FX or DX format and appropriately adjusts its light distribution pattern.

Nikon adds that the SB-900 automatically detects the fitting of fluorescent or incandescent color filters, instructing the camera to switch to the appropriate white balance setting. Designed for today’s high speed digital image capture, Nikon said the SB-900 handles repeated firing at high power with an improved booster circuit for high-speed recycling and includes a built-in thermal sensing system that protects the unit against overheating.

The Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight will be available on July 25, 2008.
