Nikon D80 Tops Sony A100, Again

Nikon D80 and Sony A100

In a one-on-one DSLR face-off the Nikon D80 again edged out the Sony Alpha 100 in terms of photographic merit (Come on guys, you are pros. Those of us who are just transitioning from a point-and-shoot may actually find the A100 more usable).

We earlier reported a 3-way group test of the Canon EOS 400D, Nikon D80 and Sony A100 where the Nikon digital SLR emerged as the best camera among the three.

This time, HardwareZone came out with a similar verdict after a thorough hands-on review of both the D80 and the A100. The review noted the Nikon D80’s better noise control and handling capability, meaning it takes great photographs and feels right in your hand with finer details of control and a good menu system.

Which is not to disparage the A100 because the Sony DSLR takes great pictures too and even has features that the D80 does not have, like an anti-dust and anti-shake system that really work. The D80 is also priced higher than the A100.

In the end, the review concluded that it’s actually the choice, need and purpose of the individual user that really matter. It’s just that, in photographic terms, the Nikon D80 comes out on top; only slightly better. But better.
