Nikon USA announced today the official existence of the new entry-level D3100 digital SLR, confirming that it will have a 1080p/24 H.264 AVCHD movie mode with continuous contrast-detect autofocus, complete with face detection and subject tracking. This, following the obligatory leaks of the past few days.

The Nikon D3100 features a 14.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor, EXPEED 2TM image processing and a 3-inch LCD at the back. Its movies will be in full HD, 1080p resolution (1920×1080) and the full time continuous AF in Live View is a first for a DSLR. Nikon said users can record cinematic quality 24p video clips, or shoot at 24 or 30 frames-per-second at 720p, ideal for sharing online.

The new DSLR will start appearing in stores in mid-September for a retail price of $700, including the AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR kit lens. Nikon also said the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens will be available starting in September for $400.
