NIKKOR Lenses Mark 75 Years

NIKKOR 75th Anniversary

Nikon is celebrating the 75th anniversary of NIKKOR camera lenses. First introduced in 1933, it debuted as Aero-NIKKOR, a camera lens for aerial photography made by Nippon Kogaku K.K., the original company name of Nikon Corporation. Since then, NIKKOR has developed extensively into both consumer and industrial markets, becoming a synonym for Japan’s leading high-performance lenses.

In 1950, Nikon cameras and NIKKOR lenses used by photographers for LIFE magazine had the good fortune of being mentioned by The New York Times as superior to those made in Germany, greatly enhancing the brand’s reputation. In 1968 NIKKOR introduced an innovation, the fisheye lens for SLRs, the OP Fisheye-Nikkor 10mm f/5.6, which became the world’s first SLR lens featuring an aspherical lens.

Aside from 75 years for NIKKOR, the year 2008 is also a commemorative year for Nikon cameras; it marks the 60th anniversary since the introduction of the first Nikon compact 35mm camera, the Nikon I, in 1948.
