New York Photo Show Celebrates The Big Chill of 1936

They had a heat wave too back then in the summer of ’36. But instead of wilting in the heat, then New York City Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia and Parks Commissioner Robert Moses gifted their people with 11 enormous outdoor swimming pools filled with cool clean water. Some of the swimming pools were as regal as a Romanesque fortress or Norman castle, others streamlined Modernist fantasies.

“Splash! A 70th Anniversary Celebration of New York City’s WPA Pools,” features vintage and contemporary photographs, architectural renderings and color-film clips from the late 1930’s. It is currently on exhibit at the Arsenal in Central Park, 64th Street and Fifth Avenue in New York, N.Y. and will run through September 7, 2006.
