Myanmar Photographer Wins Grand Prize in Nikon Photo Contest International 2008-2009

Cave of Hope by Maung Maung Gyi

Maung Maung Gyi of Myanmar is the Grand Prize winner in the Nikon Photo Contest International 2008-2009. His winning entry, “Cave of Hope,” shows a young monk praying in a silent and spiritual setting.

One of the judges, Mr. Kazuyoshi Miyoshi, says the “picture presents a depth that is unshakable, no matter how many viewings. The use of light is beautiful and creates drama. Another aspect of drama in this photo is the setting of a natural cave set up as a temple.”

The other winners in the photo contest were Kacper Kowalski of Poland who won the Nikkor 75th Anniversary Award for his entry “At the Heart of the Kaszuby Forest,” Zsolt Kudich of Hungary for his “Quarrel” which won 1st Prize in the Free Subject category and Peter Allinson of the USA for “Friends,” 1st Prize in the My Planet category.
