Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MoFi) is offering their 24 Karat Gold ULTRADISC CD-R and DVD-R, claiming that its discs can retain data for up to 300 years and 100 years, respectively.
MoFi says that unlike standard silver discs that break down easily when exposed to the elements, MoFi utilizes a patented photosensitive dye that protects the disc from the effects of light and heat. The main material of the ULTRADISC CD-R is 24 Karat Gold, which is the only material that will not corrode over time.
Professional photographers use MoFi ULTRADISC DVD-Rs to back up their digital photography and ensure their images are safe for many years. This archival disc has 4.7 GB of space, making it ideal for storing large digital images.
Compared to the average silver disc, the ULTRADISC CD-R is slightly more expensive, running $59.99 for 25 discs (or about $2.40 per disc), and the DVD-R runs $99 for 25 discs. The quality and durability make it a small price to pay compared to the cost of losing precious memories or essential photos, according to MoFi.
