Microsoft Takes Its Hand Out of the Cookie Jar

Microsoft is making changes to its Windows Vista operating system following Google’s complaint that a feature of Vista is anticompetitive. This was the agreement reached by Microsoft lawyers, state prosecutors and the Justice Department.

Google had earlier complained that Vista discourages people to use software other than Microsoft’s to search through files on their computers.

The intended changes will now allow computer users to choose which desktop search program to use, and selection of the software from Google or some other company would no longer slow down the computer as it does now.

Google has kept its complaint in low profile, confidentially transmitting its gripes to government lawyers, in part because Google itself is facing antitrust inquiries into its proposed $3.1 billion buyout of online ad firm DoubleClick.
