Marilyn Monroe: Life as a Legend is a traveling show that features the works of nearly 80 artists to explore the public and private life of one of the world’s most recognizable icons.

Big names like Andy Warhol, Allen Jones, Peter Blake, Richard Avedon, Bert Stern, Henri Cartier-Bresson and others show many aspects of Marilyn’s life, from the young ingenue to one of the most popular film stars of the 1950s.

It also includes Tom Kelley’s famous Red Velvet Pose for Playboy magazine, Douglas Kirkland’s sensuous bed sheet shots, One Night with Marilyn, and Bert Stern’s Here’s to You, a photograph of Marilyn with champagne glass in hand, celebrating her entry back into Hollywood.

And of course, there’s her most famous subway grate scene with Tom Ewell in The Seven Year Itch, as photographed by Sam Shaw.

Life as a Legend is currently on show at the Dayton Art Institute in Ohio until June 24, 2007. The show is organized by Artoma of Hamburg, Germany and International Arts & Artists.

The traveling show moves on to the Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia from July 14 to September 19, and then on to the Sioux City Art Center, Indiana, in Canada at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax and next year in Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Chicago Cultural Centre and Saginaw Art Museum, Michigan.
