Manual Focus: Can PMA Survive CES?

CES, PMA Logos

Ian Burley writes in his Manual Focus column at DPNow.com that the days of the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) trade show may be numbered.

He says concerns are beginning to emerge that the much-loved PMA trade show’s future may be threatened by the relentless growth of CES, the giant Consumer Electronics Show.

Ian cites a number of reasons. Modern photography easily fits under the umbrella term of ‘consumer electronics’ and that falls under the purview of CES. Both CES and PMA take place close to each other in the calendar, with CES taking place ahead of PMA, and this presents both a logistical and financial problem for exhibitors to maintain equally impressive presences at both shows.

Then, there’s the lack of big news at PMA. Journalists have noted that most of major new products are announced before the show or, even earlier, at the preceding CES.
