    Ed ad I discussed this question on Episode E021 of LightSource. We suggested finding ways to create separation between the subject and the background. This can be done with side lighting, or by using a hair light on the head and shoulders.

    We also discussed strategies for keeping the background black. Allowing too much light from your main source could make the background appear lighter. To keep light off of the subject, you should provide physical separation between your subject and the background and perhaps use scrims to block the light from hitting the background as well. Take a listen to E021 for more tips.
