Leica Also Looks at Recalling Some M8 Cameras

Leica M8 Digital Rangefinder

Because of banding issues and mirror/ghost images reported by some users of its expensive M8 digital rangefinder, Leica is offering three possible options for the affected cameras: recall, hardware fix or firmware upgrade.

If you’re an affected Leica M8 owner, you have first to register with them, then “you will be contacted by Customer Service to make an appointment to send in your LEICA M8,” according to Leica.

The hardware fix is a screw-on type UV/IR filters for all Leica M lenses which is hoped to correct the banding and ghosting issues. “It completely eliminates the color offset caused by infrared light,” Leica said.

The company is also offering a software fix: “As is common with digital products, Leica Camera AG is constantly working on improving firmware details such as in the case of the automatic white balance. All improvements will be made available for our customers as downloadable firmware updates.”
