Kingston Icons of Photography Offer Practical Advice

Ariana Bifulco of Boston, Massachusetts asks, “How do you get your portraits of famous people without them looking staged and without becoming overawed with the person you are photographing?”

Harry Benson replies, “I always try to keep a ‘no man’s land’ between the subject and me – friendly but not familiar. I’m there to do a job, not to try to become their friend. I was intimated when I was much younger, but now, I just go in and do my job. To get a good picture is the bottom line.”

Questions and answers like these are featured in this month’s Kingston Icons of Photography where noted photographers Harry Benson, Colin Finlay, Gerd Ludwig and Peter Read Miller address questions by professional and aspiring digital photographers.

Kingston’s Ask the Icon feature offers practical advice on photography including those related to equipment, how to capture better images and marketing one’s work.

Kingston’s ‘Icons of Photography’ program consists of three elements—20 Questions, Ask the Icon and Critique My Image. Through the program, professional photographers and enthusiasts can improve their techniques by submitting their own photography for constructive critique.
