HP Edgeline to Offer Printing Services, Not Printers?

ZDNet Australia reports that HP is planning to offer printing services, rather than printers, with its newest Edgeline technology. The HP Edgeline Technology is an ink-based printing engine designed with printheads that span the width of a page (is that you, Memjet?).

The ZDNet report indicated that Edgeline will use the HP CM8060 Color MFP or multifunctional printer, pictured above, which cannot be purchased outright, but will be managed by HP under a print contract.

No price estimates were divulged, but an average customer for the HP CM8060 Color MFP might print 20,000 pages per month over a four-year contract with 60 percent mono and 40 percent color printing.

The Edgeline technology offers fast printing by using printheads as wide as the page that’s being printed. It also decreases wear and tear by not being in contact with the paper while printing. A hydrophilic bonding agent is “fused” to the paper before the ink is applied, resulting in near-immediate touch-dry printing.
