HP Color Matching Technology demo

HP is developing a new color matching technology they say will take the guesswork out of matching colors. The new mobile imaging technology intends to provide consumers expert advice via cellphone on products that require color coordination, such as cosmetics.

It works this way: you take a photo of yourself holding a specially designed color chart near your skin. The image is sent from the phone via MMS to an advisory service, and seconds later a text reply arrives with a color recommendation listing the shades of makeup best suited to your complexion.

Aside from makeup, the color matching technology can easily extend to coordinate colors in clothes, furniture, houses, cars, utensils, web pages, anything.

HP says retailers, consumer goods and other companies that require a high level of color or image coordination could implement the technology to offer services that help their customers select the right products for their needs.
