General Electric Enters Digital Camera Market

Here comes GE, making its way into the digital market and throwing its hat into the ring. The General Electric brand will be borne by General Imaging Company, who will design, make and distribute an all-new line of GE-branded digital cameras.

Their first bets will be entry-level digital cameras with 7 megapixels of resolution and 2.5-inch LCD screens. At the higher-end, GE cameras will offer up to 12 megapixels of resolution and 3-inch LCD screens.

GE cameras will hit store shelves in North America from mid-April, while shipments to Europe and Asia are scheduled for later this year. The GE digital cameras will make their debut at the PMA show in early March.

The General Imaging powerhouse is led by Chairman and CEO Hiroshi “Hugh” Komiya, former president of Olympus Japan; Rene Buhay, VP Sales, North America, a Filipino who holds an impressive track record in sales with Ricoh, Philips and others; and noted Japanese designer Takeyoshi Kawano, who counts the Sony Walkman, Sony Vaio and Olympus Stylus cameras among his successful designs.
