Fujifilm has announced a new image sensor – the Super CCD EXR – which the company describes as a 3-in1 sensor for high resolution, high sensitivity and wide dynamic range.
The EXR updates Fujifilm’s Super CCD technology used in their latest digital cameras. The new technology re-arranges the pixels in the sensor, beefs up its photodiodes and comes up with an algorithm that allows the photographer to optimize his photos in the face of the conflicting demands of resolution and light sensitivity.
Essentially, the Super CCD EXR image sensor allows the photographer to switch among 3 different modes to suit the shooting conditions. When lighting is good, he can opt for higher resolution; in low light, he can choose to do away with some resolution in favor of light sensitivity and high dynamic range.
Fujifilm still has to announce new camera models that will use the new Super CCD EXR image sensor.
