At the rate camera phones are improving, they just might replace point-and-shoot digital cameras anytime now. Face detection and red-eye correction have just been added to the camera phone’s growing list of capabilities.

FotoNation says consumers can expect to see camera phones with these technologies on the market within the year. This is the same company which debuted camera phone software with Face Tracker at the 2006 Mobile Imaging Summit last October.

Pentax uses FotoNation’s software in its cameras to detect faces and automatically set proper exposure, focus, and color balance. FotoNation also currently licenses their red-eye correction technology to camera manufacturers Kodak, Nikon, Pentax, and Samsung.

The company will introduce new camera phone models with these new features at PMA 2007 photo marketing trade show next month.
