Epson Develops OLPF for Low Moire, Thinner Cameras

Epson Optical Low Pass Filter

Japan’s Epson Toyocom Corporation says they are commercially developing a new optical low pass filter (OLPF) for digital cameras. This OLPF features a new structure that enables the uniform separation of light rays across the visible spectrum.

The new technology promises reduced moiré by using two quartz plates, instead of the usual three, to separate light rays. Moiré is an adverse effect of irregular patterns which are commonly shown when photographing fabrics and textiles.

The new design enables digital cameras to be lighter and thinner. The smaller and lighter design also makes it easier for the cameras to handle CCD-shifting for image stabilization and dust reduction if implemented.
