DPreview: Canon 400D Good, Nikon D80 Better

Canon EOS 400D

Digital Photography Review has made a thorough review of the Canon EOS 400D (Rebel XTi in the US) and came up with a glowing approval of the latest Canon DSLR: excellent resolution with lots of detail, good color, good dynamic range, its own dust removal system, and a host of other positive attributes.

However, DPreview noted that despite being a worthy upgrade to the very successful EOS 350D by following its tried and tested path, the 400D came out predictably with its attributes and did not take any risk with the winning formula; so predictably in fact that Nikon designers saw what was coming and came out with the better D80.

In terms of photographic merit and ease of handling the Nikon D80 came out better than the EOS 400D. However, DPreview pointed out that the 400D is still a great camera; it’s only that, unlike the 350D when it came out, the 400D is no longer the first or obvious choice.
