Digital camera sales by Japanese manufacturers will continue to grow in 2007 but in a slower clip, according to the Tokyo-based Camera and Imaging Products Association. CIPA said growth will only be 7.5% this year, compared to 22% last year when lower prices and wider choices boosted sales.

Canon and Sony are forecast to sell about 85-million cameras this year, up only 7.5% from last year’s 79-million units. Demand will continue to slow down to 4.3% in 2008 and 2.5% in 2009.

CIPA also predicts that shipments of DSLR cameras will continue to show double-digit growth in 2007, but their growth too will slow compared to 2006: 14% (6-million units) this year versus 39% (5.26-million) last year.

Canon and Nikon are the market leaders in the lucrative DSLR arena, while newcomers Sony and Panasonic are also trying to expand.
