Cellphones are Taking More “Primary” Photos

More people are now relying on their cellphones to take primary pictures, according to a study by the Consumer Electronics Association. The number, though still on the minority, is growing. CEA said camera phones account for 9% of primary still image capture, more than double the figure for 2005.

“Among consumers who now classify their cellphone as their primary image capture device, 47% also own a digital camera,” says Tim Herbert, CEA market research senior director.

The study indicated though that consumers have yet to significantly engage in the practice of substituting digital cameras with camera phones . But “as cellphones progress to 3-plus megapixels, offering greater storage and more features, this trend may change,” Herbert said.
