New Cheap Photoshop Retouching Video Series

Its me David Griffin, The Prince of Cheap… I'M BAAAAAAAAACK!

The "Prince of Cheap" still has his nose deep within the "Whats cool?" and the "Whats hot?" for photographers! This time I have another review! As us photographers scurry round and round for ways to enhance our final images one, eventually may look to Photoshop to help take his/her image(s) over the "bland" hump. This is where the online video tutorial series brought to you by the folks over at www.RetouchCreative.com come in! They've created a series of accessible, easy to follow, in depth tutorials on: Beauty Retouching, Natural Beauty Retouching (focused on enhancing photos created with natural light), Fashion Retouching video 1 & 2, Illustrative Retouching video 1 & 2, Conceptual Fashion Retouching, and one of my favorites - Landscape Retouching!

Lets start with the basics. Make sure you are already fairly familiar with Photoshop as the video works with Photoshop CS4 for the enhancing. Though not necessary to carry out the enhancing you will learn the presenter does use a graphic tablet of some kind to do his editing instead of with a mouse (you would've heard the constant mouse click as the video showed the enhancing). No additional Photoshop plugins will be needed to recreate the enhancing that was shown in the videos. www.RetouchCreative.com so far offers 7 videos at a cost range from $19.95 up to $29.95. The vids range from 49 minutes to 1hrs 50 minutes. The videos stream from special servers that seem to deliver some of the better streamed video quality I've encountered on the net. Audio quality is a smidgen lower than I'd like but nothing a simple level up on my basic cheap audio speakers couldn't take care of. Pluggins to download? NOPE! Just have flash installed in your browser like most of the computers on the planet and you shouldn't have any problem viewing the vids. Lastly, after you purchase a video you can watch it indefinitely! (However we'd like a version on DVD at some point in time! Of course.)
Topics covered? Below is a clip from the websites text what the videos will cover.

"Each of our streaming videos cover start to finish post production of individual photographs with detailed explanations of the tools and methods that are used.

Each video features a distinct style and deals with unique problems reaching at different end results and displays the creative uses of ordinary Photoshop tools such as layers, masking, dodge/burn and explains them in detail. Because we offer streaming videos, you can start watching instantly after your purchase or anytime you want, as many times as you want!"

Some of the the concepts you will learn are:

  • Extracting from different backgrounds
  • Cleaning and Re-sculpting of the entire face, head and the body
  • Enhancing facial symmetry
  • Enhancing the eyes and the lips
  • Artificial highlight and catch light creation
  • Background creation
  • Selective coloring and overall color toning
  • Montage of critical elements
  • Special effects creation and implementation

———————————————————————————

As you can see based on the writeup the www.RetouchCreative.com system of videos is pretty in depth. From watching the initial 5 released videos, I can say that the information presented is the real deal. Though I notice the presenters final enhanced imagery was on the more eccentric and daring side - the techniques shown are some serious problem solvers for photographers and aspiring retouchers! The skills I picked up already have me rethinking the way I retouch a face (particularly the dreaded girl with big hair images). I shoot lots of women, I can see exactly where I'll be using the new retouching tools I've just learned. Particularly the section on re-sculpting a face and perfecting symmetry in a face. As for the Landscape retouching tutorial… what a beauty! Imaging taking a flat image and making it seem almost 3D with the fewest amount of Photoshop tools… AWESOME!

My the techniques used in background removal and replacement are top notch and really give the viewer good fast ways to make an image more interesting. Viewing the original Illustrative Retouching Video really drove home the other techniques that I was shown in the other videos that I saw. The presenter used Photoshop to create swirling fading and gliding lines that wrapped around the subject and gave the impression of 3D! All with Photoshop and no other special tools. Awesome again!!

Summary www.retouchcreative.com have created a very strong and growing library of retouching and enhancement videos that offer a good foundation in the use of Photoshop for Retouching your images. In some ways videos in the series stray away from conventional commercial retouching tactics but manage to land you in the boat anyway! Like any other in depth Photoshop based retouching system that deals with people imagery you WILL see lots and lots of time spent with Adobe Photoshop's famed "Healing Brush" so strap yourself in. I myself and going to be re-watching the videos over and over again because they offer so many tactics that can lift anybodies Photoshop Game even higher! I will by all means give the Beauty Retouching video a Cheap thumbs up! It set lots of things in order and have helped me rethink how I enhance my own images. The rest of the videos are particularly targeted at a type of look but seem to be threaded together by the same strategic enhancing method. A plus in my book! Only things I would change? Increase the volume a few steps. Enhance a wider range of differing images with different lighting. Set a single price for any video and create a 3 video's for $$ package. Other than that… check out the www.retouchcreative.com video site and see for yourself which videos may help you most! There it is… NOW GET TA RETOUCHIN!
