Carnegie Mellon Renders 2D Photos Into 3D

3D Photo Rendering

Is it possible to create a three-dimensional rendering based only on a single photograph? Researchers at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science think they can.

They have developed a computer vision algorithm – they call it the Automatic Photo Pop-up program – that essentially can turn a 2D outdoor photo into a 3D model.

With two years of research behind it, the Automatic Photo Pop-up draws on geometry to compile a three dimensional scene from a single photo. It works in ways similar to that of a children’s pop-up book, from which the program’s name is derived.

If perfected, the 3D program can have a host of possibilities in many applications from real estate, to architecture, to defense.
