Canon Powershot S5 IS with 12x Zoom

Canon today introduced the Powershot S5 IS with a big 12x optical zoom (36-342mm equivalent) and image stabilization. The S5 updates the S3 in Canon’s lineup of bridge cameras.

The new S5 now features the DIGIC III processor which adds face detection technology, improved auto focus, auto exposure, and flash, a vari-angle 2.5″ LCD screen, and a hot-shoe that will accept Canon’s EX Speedlite flashes.

The Canon Powershot S5 IS also uses an Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) lens to reduce chromatic abberations at telephoto, and an Ultra-Sonic Motor (USM) for fast, silent zoom operation. The new camera will be available in July with an estimated selling price of $500.

In the same announcement, Canon also unveiled the new PowerShot SD850 IS Digital ELPH camera, now also featuring the DIGIC III processor, face detection and a 4x (35-140mm equivalvent) zoom. The SD850 may be seen in stores in mid-June with a price tag of $400.
