Rob Galbraith was right all along. Canon has now acknowledged the autofocus defect in its EOS-1D Mark III flagship DSLR and is recalling all unsold units.

In a letter to its dealers, Canon said “we have concluded that there is a quality issue with some EOS-1D Mark III units in the market.” The problem, it said, can be linked to the adjustment of the AF Sub Mirror.

The company also informed its dealers that shipments of the cameras in question have been stopped and that all unsold units are to be collected back.

The Canon EOS-1D Mark III is a $4000 pro camera that could take 10fps 10-megapixel photos. Photographer and camera tester Rob Galbraith first raised the issue about the EOS-1D Mark III having autofocus problems in hot, bright conditions like covering sports events. In his tests, Rob said the Mark III simply failed to focus in many instances. It took a long while for Canon to acknowledge the defect.
