Canon India is trying to persuade customers against the gray market by initiating a Canon Edge Program, an attractive finance scheme to encourage and educate customers to buy Canon Digital SLR cameras from authorized Canon dealers.
Customers can buy a Canon EOS camera on credit with 0% interest in the finance scheme – along with a return ticket, 1 GB card, 1-year extended warranty, a Canon EOS Pro kit (jacket, cap and camera bag), digital photography training coupons, lens, accessories discount coupon, complimentary sensor and lens cleaning coupon, a digital photography course discount, and a free digital photography handbook.
The offer is good for the Canon EOS 400D, EOS 30D, EOS 1D Mark III, EOS 5D, and EOS 1D Mark II models from Canon authorized dealers.
The gray market has always been a viable alternative for customers who want a better price. The gray market of course exists because of the disparity between the prices of the same goods between countries, which could be attributed to the cost of maintaining distributors and after sales services. The price difference can be 20 to 30 percent.
In the Philippines, for example, the Nikon D80 body can be bought from the gray market for about $800, more in line with international prices, while the authorized distributor sells it for $1100.
