BenQ Finds a Buyer for its Digital Camera Business

Weeks after deciding to close down its camera business, Taiwan’s BenQ has found a buyer for its shuttered digital camera-related R&D and manufacturing facilities.

The buyer is Ability Enterprise Co., Ltd., a local contract camera maker in Taipei who has also been an active supplier for BenQ. Ability also produces cameras for Samsung Electronics Co of South Korea as well as Casio Computer Co and Nikon Corp of Japan.

It will be recalled that BenQ has had a string of five consecutive quarterly losses after failing to turn around the unprofitable mobile phone unit purchased from Siemens AG.

BenQ earlier sold its optical disk drive unit to local rival Lite-On Technology Corp. in a move to further separate brand and contract manufacturing businesses.
