The average price of a digital camera this year is $163, a drop of 11.6 per cent compared to $182 last year.
This was among the findings of a study made by the market research firm NPD Group for the week ending Nov. 25 which surveyed the sales performance of consumer electronic products on the Saturday following Black Friday, which usually signals the start of the holiday shopping season.
The NPD study shows that consumer electronics are drawing in more revenue but with fewer sales. Overall, consumer electronics drew in a higher revenue volume year-over-year but at a slower rate. LCD and Plasma TVs, especially those with bigger than 30-inch screens, are the hottest selling items.
Digital cameras did well too, ranking third after LCD TV and notebook PCs as the top grossing consumer technology in 2006. So far this year, digital cameras have made up 8.7 percent of the total revenue in consumer technology, totaling $182 million dollars.
