USB 3.0 Conjuring

Are you ready for USB 3.0? You don’t have to be. It will be ready for you when it comes out in the first half of 2008, yes, that soon. The USB 3.0 standard will be released at that time but compatible devices are expected a little farther down the road, in 2009.

This was revealed recently by Intel in its Developer Forum, saying the new USB standard will deliver data transfer rates of up to 4.8GBps, much faster than the present USB 2.0 (480MBps) or Firewire (400 and 800MBps) interfaces.

Intel says USB 3.0 will be optimized for low-power consumption. It will also be backwards compatible with earlier USB standards.

“USB 3 is the next logical step for the PC’s most popular wired connectivity,” says Jeff Ravencraft, technology strategist with Intel, adding, “The digital era requires high-speed performance and reliable connectivity to move the enormous amounts of digital content now present in everyday life.”

No choice, kid. We hafta move on.
