Ansel Adams, the Playwright: 80 Years at Yosemite

The Bracebridge Dinner

Legendary photographer Ansel Adams was also a playwright who wrote an elaborate Christmas story, the “Bracebridge Dinner.” He even wrote its music. In fact, he almost gave up photography in favor of music.

It has been 80 years since he wrote that play and this year, a lavish presentation has been prepared to mark the holiday pageant’s 80th anniversary. The “Bracebridge Dinner” will have eight performances at the Yosemite Park’s Ahwahnee Hotel. Families from around the world have been attending the theater-dinner presentation which was originally conceived in the 1920’s as a clever attraction for travelers to the Yosemite Park in wintertime.

The “Bracebridge Dinner” tells the story of a holiday evening at Bracebridge Hall, home to an unusual English nobleman based loosely on a character in a short story by Washington Irving, author of “Rip Van Winkle.” This season’s performances run through Dec. 26.
